An Amazon Gift Card is not a single-game currency and not a universal international voucher. It tops up the balance of one specific Amazon.com Inc. marketplace — amazon.com for the US, amazon.co.uk for the UK, amazon.de for Germany, amazon.com.tr for Turkey, amazon.in for India, and over a dozen other regional sites. Each marketplace keeps its own balance in its own local currency, and Amazon never converts between them. GC-103 and the strict regional lock
The most common Amazon Gift Card redemption error is trying to enter a code from one country on the site of another. Amazon answers with code GC-103, "This gift card is not valid for this website", and there is no workaround — neither a VPN nor switching the account region in Account Settings will let a foreign card go through. A US card works only on amazon.com, a UK card only on amazon.co.uk. The subtler trap is that two euro-zone sites — amazon.de and amazon.fr — also do not accept each other's cards, because each runs under its own EU-state VAT regime and Amazon keeps the marketplace balances entirely separate. So when picking a denomination in the catalogue, the card region has to match the Amazon account region: TR for amazon.com.tr, IN for amazon.in, DE for amazon.de, and so on.
Expiry: never, 10 years, or 1 year depending on the country
The popular claim that Amazon Gift Cards "never expire" only holds for some marketplaces. On amazon.com the cards genuinely have no expiration date, as required by the federal CARD Act and California Civil Code 1749.5. The same applies on amazon.co.uk, amazon.de and amazon.ca. A Turkish card on amazon.com.tr, however, expires 10 years from the purchase date — not from redemption — which is unique among Amazon's regions. India is stricter still: an Amazon Pay Gift Card on amazon.in is valid for one year after redeem, since technically it is not a classic gift card but an Amazon Pay wallet under RBI regulation. If the plan is to stockpile balance for later, US or EU cards are the safe bets; Turkish and Indian denominations are best spent quickly.
Variable amount $0.50-$2000: a unique ceiling among gift cards
On amazon.com any Amazon Gift Card can be issued in a custom amount between fifty cents and $2,000 through the standard variable-amount option (corporate channels stretch this to $5,000). That is well above the ceiling on most peers — Steam Gift Cards top out at $100, PSN cards typically at the same level, iTunes Gift Cards similarly. Eurozone cards reach €5,000, UK cards £1,000, Turkish cards 1,000 TRY per denomination. The minimum end of amazon.com is also unusual: $1 and even $0.50 cards are officially issued, but those micro-denominations carry the main anti-fraud risk. Mass-redeeming tiny cards on a fresh account with no payment instrument attached often triggers Amazon's drop-account detector. The pragmatic move is a mid-range card you spend quickly, not a stack of $500+ sitting on a brand-new account.
Anti-fraud locks: what to avoid
Amazon's anti-fraud heuristic is well known to long-time gift-card users. Triggers include: a new or long-dormant account, no card-on-file, redeeming a large gift balance (>$200 a day), or switching the account region simultaneously with redemption. Amazon then locks the account temporarily and asks for verification — usually a passport and a bank statement. Players in regions where the official store has limited card support find this especially painful, since producing a US bank statement is often impossible. The practical rule of thumb: redeem mid-range denominations, place an order on a physical product or extend Prime/Audible right away, do not let $500+ sit free on a fresh account, and do not chain a dozen tiny cards back-to-back. What an Amazon balance cannot pay for
The gift balance is universal within its marketplace, but not unlimited. An Amazon Gift Card cannot pay for AWS services (Amazon Web Services run on a separate corporate billing system), Amazon Pharmacy in the US (prescription medication), purchases of other gift cards (anti-laundering rule), recurring Amazon Fresh subscriptions, online Whole Foods orders, or alcohol, tobacco and pharmacy categories at Whole Foods even offline. In a Whole Foods store the card is fine for ordinary groceries, but Whole Foods online deliveries still require a regular bank card. Subscriptions, on the other hand, work cleanly: Prime, Audible, Kindle Unlimited and Amazon Music Unlimited all bill against the matching marketplace's balance — Prime US against the dollar wallet, Prime DE against the euro wallet, and so on.
Amazon Coins, Twitch Prime and Prime Gaming becoming Luna
Amazon's gaming branch saw two big shifts in 2025 and both matter when picking a card. First, Amazon Coins — the virtual currency for in-app purchases in the Amazon Appstore on Android — was fully discontinued on 20 August 2025, together with the Android Appstore itself. Coin sales stopped on 20 February 2025 and Amazon refunded the outstanding balances automatically. The Appstore continues to run only on Fire TV and Fire Tablet hardware, so any third-party listing for "Amazon Coins" is out of date. A persistent myth worth clearing up: Amazon Coins were never used to buy Twitch Bits; Bits have always been purchased in USD or EUR via Amazon Pay, PayPal or a card, on a separate flow from Coins. Second shift: the Twitch Prime brand was retired back in 2020 (replaced by Prime Gaming), and in October 2025 Prime Gaming itself stepped aside — its perks (free PC games, a monthly Twitch channel sub, in-game loot for dozens of titles) moved to luna.amazon.com. Alongside that, Amazon added the GameNight collection of 25+ controller-free multiplayer games, playable from a phone or browser with no separate cloud-gaming subscription. If Prime is funded from a US- or EU-card balance, Luna and GameNight access kicks in straight away. On Twitch the Amazon balance pays for monthly channel sub gifts and the Prime subscription itself — just not Bits.
Amazon and players in regions with limited card support
Amazon never had a fully localised storefront for some regions — there is no amazon.ru and no domestic delivery, for example. Players in those markets traditionally shop on amazon.com or amazon.de with international shipping, or use Amazon for digital subscriptions and content — Prime Video, Kindle, Audible, Twitch. Since 2022, direct payment with locally issued bank cards has not gone through on amazon.com or amazon.de, and a gift card is the working route to top up the balance for Prime, Kindle, Audible and Twitch. Importantly, redemption itself is not IP-blocked: Amazon checks the region in Account Settings, not the connection address, so a VPN is neither required nor a way around GC-103. A US-region account paired with a US card is correct; a Germany-region account paired with a DE card is correct. Switching the account region is instant, but it does not carry an existing balance into the new currency.
Turkish arbitrage and India's Amazon Pay flow
Two regions stand apart. The Turkish amazon.com.tr has historically priced products and subscriptions lower thanks to a weaker lira, and a portion of users buy TR cards specifically for arbitrage — but the regional lock still holds, a TR balance only works on the Turkish site. India is unusual in another way: instead of a classic Amazon Gift Card, amazon.in issues an Amazon Pay Gift Card, and the redeemed amount lands in the Amazon Pay Wallet, which is integrated with UPI and partner QR codes. That means an Indian card partially escapes amazon.in itself — it can be spent at offline merchants accepting Amazon Pay QR. The catch is the one-year wallet expiry after redemption, in line with RBI rules for digital wallets in India.
